What do new moms need? Definitely not another onesie. Here’s a list of fun and useful gift suggestions that are just for mom.
1. Stroller organizer
Many gift guides for new moms suggest buying mom a stylish diaper bag. This is a good idea – IF you know exactly what kind of bag she wants. Keep in mind that this bag that will likely serve not just as a diaper bag but also a purse. I’m so particular about the bags I buy that I would never buy a bag for someone else. A stroller organizer is a much safer option. Good for keeping all the essentials on hand and can replace a bulky diaper bag on short excursions.
If mom is planning on breastfeeding, this cream is a must. Even though both of my babies latched on pretty well, my nipples still got dry and cracked and this cream was a godsend. And if mom doesn’t end up needing it, she can use it to smooth lips, heels, elbows, and cuticles.
3. “Mom” gear
Sure, the yoga pants, 4th day hair, and the full set of luggage under her eyes will identify her as a new mom from a mile away but get her some “mom” gear that also identifies her as the rock star that she is.
You spend a lot of time sitting as a new mom – feeding your baby, rocking your baby, feeding your baby again… If mom is a reader, an e-reader is an ideal gift because you only need one hand to hold it and turn pages. It’s really hard trying hold a baby in one arm, a paperback in the other hand, and then trying to turn a page. Trust me.
6. Baby & mommy bath gift set
One of my favourite things to do with my children when they were little was take baths with them. Not only is it a great bonding activity but there’s practically no way of staying dry while giving a baby a bath, so you might as well save some time and get clean too. And then, if you’re lucky, you can pass them off to dad, grab a book, and linger in the bath for a while.
7. Instant Pot / slow cooker
One of the best gifts I received when I gave birth to my daughter was a freezer full of food. My mom and sister baked up muffins, cooked several kinds of soups and stews, and prepped some meals in Ziploc bags to dump into my slow cooker. If your new mom doesn’t own a slow cooker, an Instant Pot is a great multi-tasking gift that will be a life saver. If she already owns one, the prepared meal option is sure to be a winner.
You might think this is an odd gift for a new mom. Yes, you’ll definitely need a hardcore case for your phone because it will get dropped. Repeatedly. But the Popsocket is for when you’re scrolling through Instragram in the middle of the night while feeding your baby and your baby suddenly flails, knocks your phone out of your hand, and it goes flying across the room. When attached to your phone, it helps keep the phone securely in your hand. You can also use it to prop your phone up on a hard surface to watch videos.
9. Healthy snacks
As a new mom, it’s sometimes hard to sit down and have a proper meal. I liked keeping a stash of easy to eat healthy snacks on hand so I could grab a bite while breastfeeding, between diaper changes, while out running errands, etc. Try making up a couple of baskets/bins of all of mom’s favourite snacks so she place them around the house or in the car.
10. Water bottle
Staying well hydrated is essential when breastfeeding and this bottle allows you to open the spout and drink using only one hand. It also has a straw so you don’t need to tip your head back to drink. Everyone in my family uses this style and brand of water bottle, even my 4 year old.
11. Nursing cover / scarf
My favourite nursing covers were scarves like this one that when not in use, appeared to be just a pretty scarf. This one also has snaps so you can turn it into a wrap or a shrug.
As a new mom, you really can’t have too much lounge wear. And if you can wear that lounge wear out in public without anyone thinking you’re wearing pajamas? Bonus.
Babies will put absolutely everything in your mouth and nothing is more attractive to them than mom’s shiny jewelry. These teething necklaces are not only fashionable, but the beads are also made of soft chewy silicone so baby can chew to heart’s content.
Being a mom is hard. Parenting is hard. Sometimes you just need to get lost in other people’s parenting misadventures to help you realize that you’ll be just fine.
Share your love of music with your baby. From the Beatles, to Metallica, Maroon 5, and Justin Timberlake, there’s something for all musical tastes.
